Our Story
After 40 years across most facets of the hospitality industry, we found ourselves looking for the next challenge.
Friends suggested that we try our hand at motel management. We had accumulated all those hospitality skills, so how hard could it be?
After being given two days training we were suddenly in charge or a 40 room motel with restaurant in regional NSW. It was sink or swim time.
Starting with the nuances of the reservations system, the various booking options, what price parity issues are with OTA’s and how to fix them, managing staff (inc chefs who are really their own category), electronic room key devices, internet/phone/computer skills and knowledge, liquor licensing and all other compliance regulations, suppliers and pricing, budgets, answering online reviews and the list continues. Wow, that a steep learning curve that was. Not only time consuming but stressful.
However, we learnt a lot, we made mistakes along the way but finally had a well oiled machine. We invested in training and developed a fabulous team, all proud to work for us and committed to providing the best customer service around. Our restaurant became one of the ‘go to’ places in town – unusual for a motel restaurant . Our occupancy figures improved as did our profitability. After only 18 months we were awarded the Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards in Hospitality.
So back to the question – How hard can it be to run a Motel? Even with skills, it is challenging but also very rewarding. The people you meet, the stories they have, it is a great industry.
